Super Awesome Quest Review
With the name Super Awesome Quest I didn’t know what to expect of the game, from developer BoomZap Entertainment. What I found was an enjoyable free-to-play adventure RPG that has a unique tile based combat system and a charming art style.
You begin your super awesome quest by choosing from one of two heroes, Greg the Paladin, who is a narcissistic womaniser, or Val the Valkyrie, who is hopelessly addicted to gambling. As I am not a narcissistic womaniser I chose Val, who I found to have a more tactical set of attacks. Your choice of hero hardly matters as you end up unlocking the other along the way, as well as a final hero towards the end of the quest.
Combat plays out through hidden tiles on a board, which you must reveal to gain attacks. Enemies have a countdown system for when it is their turn and this allows you to plan in advance, to deter attacks or deal damage. At the start of the game you can progress fairly easily without having to plan your moves. A difficulty spike midway through the game guarantees a more thoughtful approach to the battles and this is when the game really shines. As enemies do a lot of damage I found defensive moves to be vital in battles when playing as Val. Multiple opponents also forced me to consider using attacks that would damage every enemy, and also made me discover how to take out enemies quickly. Resetting enemy countdown timers and using magic to deter physical attacks are just some of the ways you can do this.
Every level you play has a five star ranking for each bronze, silver, and gold medal. Since the game gets considerably more difficult the further you progress, it’s important to replay these levels to gain experience and loot. It does feel like grinding and that’s because it is. Whilst it is fun to replay previous stages at a more difficult level, there’s no other means of progression, making it a bit of a slog. Side Quests break up the tedium but these levels are similar to the main ones. You either have to complete a set of levels to finish the stage, or play as a specific character. There is an arena where you constantly battle up to a hundred enemies and this really tests your skill.
Complimenting the experience is a surprisingly robust crafting system. There is a plethora of items, armour and weapons to make, which add damage and specific attacks to your roster during battle. This makes weapon and armour selection a careful process that can adhere to your playstyle. You can also craft pets of which there are a number of, these do damage during battle helping you slightly.
One of the best parts about Super Awesome Quest is that it is a free-to-play game with no penalties for playing. There are no wait times for after you complete a level and whilst there are in-game purchases and micro-transactions, they aren’t forced upon the player. Daily bounties reward you and give you incentive to come back each day and there were no times I felt I had to pay-to-win.
The game exudes charm with characters poking fun at each other. The graphics and animations are simple yet appealing and the music is suitable to the game, if slightly forgettable. My only complaint is the lack of variation in environments, but considering most of the screen is taken up by the battle board, it’s only a minor thing.
Super Awesome Quest is a game that offers a fun RPG experience that relies upon its fun and in depth battle system. There is a surprising amount of depth to the crafting system that will make you want to unlock new gear and items. It has a high level of replayability but it hinges upon grinding stages and previous levels. Thankfully because the combat is enjoyable this isn’t too troublesome and indeed you will find yourself having more fun with the challenging later levels. If you’re looking for a free-to-play game that offers rewarding gameplay then you can’t go wrong with Super Awesome Quest.
