Rush Bros Review
Having recently been Greenlit and now hitting the Steam front window is the lovechild of Super Meat Boy and Beat Hazard, called Rush Bros, and I must say: never before has a game made me do a sort of a laughing scream at a computer game because I just got overtaken in a race - considering how racing games is easily my worst genre.
The storyline is fairly simple. Two very talented brothers who normally work together have a falling out and go solo. They then both partake in races, and it's simple; two DJ's enter, only one leaves.
You have to option to play with others or you can be a lonely DJ and play by yourself. However, unless you untick the option to challenge other players, it's pretty difficult to have a race on your own, if that can be called a race at all. Once you find another player, it's still pretty challenging as you have to agree on a level which can end up extending the wait before you get to race. The goal is to get to the end of the level with as few deaths and in the quickest time possible. But of course, it isn't going to be as easy as running around whilst jumping and leaping off walls.
Consisting of 40 levels for you and a friend to race through, this game will last you a while. Like Super Meat Boy, you run to the end of the level, but obstacles such as spikes, saws and pools of acid block your path. As well as this, there are levers which you have to get on and quickly pull to open doors.
Rush Bros is a two player competitive competition, as you had probably gathered. You can either host a friends only game or just start playing, challenging other people around the world. Or as mentioned above you can go solo.
Where the true awesomeness of the game truly shines through is the music. You can select a wide variety of songs from the default game soundtrack, all of which are epic. But as if this wasn't enough, you can search through your computer sound files and add your own song playlist to race to. I found running away from a massive spike wall whilst listening to 'Fast Track to Browntown' (By Danny Baranowsky) extremely awesome indeed.
Level design is pretty simple, but slowly gets longer, harder and more complex as you progress through the game.Though it can also get slightly annoying, as when you die, you restart the level. Later in the game, levels are stupidly long, so this can get a bit tedious and frustrating but this is all part of the challenge.
During your time racing, you will encounter power-ups. These little goodies can be a help to you, such as a temporary double jump or speed boost, or they can be items to throw your opponent off. Switch your enemy's controls, turn their screen upside down, or zoom them in so that they can only just about see their character.
As mentioned before, music is what this game is about. Techno, dance, dubstep, this game has got all the good ones. Many are very catchy and all of them are just amazing. It's the music that pretty much stops you going insane in later levels where you will find yourself dying at every turn.
another small gimmick that is effective is that if the music playing is intense, some objects will move faster; such as speakers in the background, moving walls and even saws spinning round faster.
Control is also important; one wrong move and you're going to end up dead. The game does suggest a controller for gameplay, but I never get on with them so I stuck with keyboard, and when I wasn't panicking it still handled pretty well. I do have some practise in games like this as I'm very fond of games like Super Meat Boy and I Wanna Be The Guy, both games are platformers and you should expect to die a hell of a lot.
Overall, Rush Bros is a great game if you want to have some fun or have a good laugh with one of your friends, but not really good for much else. It's also not one that you can play for a long time. However, it's not expensive and with there being a two pack bundle available on steam, you could buy one for a friend, so it's worth it if you want to just kill some time.
Rush Bros. (Reviewed on Windows)
This game is good, with a few negatives.

Nice review Luke, may have to check this one out, though Super Meat boy did make me want to smash my PC into 1000 pieces.
