PES 2016: Euro 2016 DLC Review

PES 2016: Euro 2016 DLC Review

The European Championships should be the highlight of the summer for most fans of football, as 32 nations battle it out for the accolade of being crowned champions of the continent. Europe’s elite will all be vying for the chance to hold aloft the Henri Delaunay Trophy. Now, the likes of the imperious Ibrahimovic, rampant Ronaldo and graceful Griezmann all lie in your hands.

PES 2016 is a superb game, with very few drawbacks, (see here for our review of the game) and this DLC further adds to what is already a stellar title. Konami received exclusive rights to the Euro 2016 game, which when announced at the time was a massive coup, and you can see why. All 24 teams in the tournament are represented, (as are some other European teams that were already in the game). Of the Euro 2016 qualifiers, 15 have fully licensed kits, but for the nine teams without licenses, an option file is available for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 users. Regardless of the option file and nine unlicensed teams, the kits are still beautifully represented.

The gameplay in itself hasn’t been altered, but it was all very smooth. I loved how the vibrancy was captured: seeing a game between Spain and France where one half of the stadium donned the red of the Spaniards, and the other showing Les Bleus supporters in full colour was a nice touch. The stadium, Stade de France, looked magnificent under the floodlights, as did the advertising hoardings and the official match ball. Also, the team and player likenesses are as good as ever. For instance, you feel a real contrast when controlling the nimble-footed and agile David Silva, compared to the powerful and tricky Ross Barkley.

Furthermore, player ratings have been increased where players might have had a good season or are knocking on the door for international selection. Facial likenesses have also been upgraded with nearly 200 faces being added, which adds a feel of authenticity to the overall product. These details within the menu are a welcomed addition, along with the fonts and colours used. There is a dynamic and rich texture throughout the menus and within gameplay.

Konami have been keeping their fans updated with regards to what is in the DLC. They announced that “17 original members of Master League” amongst others, will be making a return as managers in myClub. Furthermore, the official PES Twitter feed are Tweeting out myClub bonuses and keeping fans updated with what is on offer.

I was impressed with the DLC for PES 2016. It does the basics perfectly, by adding small details that help to capture the vibrancy of an international tournament. Also, the winter transfers have been updated, which was a nice added bonus. For those who already own a copy of Pro Evolution Soccer 2016, you can download the DLC and play your part in football folklore, as the Euro 2016 add-on is available to download from the 24th March. Otherwise, a disc version of the game will be released for PlayStation users on the 21st April for £18.99.

Excellent. Look out for this one.
