Duck Game Mobile Review
Duck Game doesn’t exactly sound like a title that will have you playing it for hours on end. I was skeptical too; when I decided to take this up, I didn’t exactly load the game up having high hopes for it.
I opened up the game, navigated my way around the menus and discovered it was multiplayer only. ‘No problem’ I thought to myself, although I was doubtful, feeling that the community would ruin my anticipation of the game even more. Instead, I was disappointed more than I originally thought I could have. ‘Press U (The OUYA’s equivalent of the Xbox 360’s Guide button) to Start!’ The game was local competitive only. So far I wasn’t looking forward to reviewing this, as even playing it was proving difficult.
Eventually, I was able to get hold of someone to fit a game in with. Loading up the game once again, I jumped into a match once more. What ensued for the next two hours was a shouting/laughing-fest which started every time one of us died. My initial thoughts of the game were flattened completely and I couldn’t help but enjoy the game even more, the more I played it.
The game is simple; kill all other ducks. You start with nothing, but the blocky little 2-D environment is littered with weapons and other tools for you to pick up. There are a wide range of weapons that each have different effects. For instance, there is a revolver which has a slow fire-rate but can penetrate through crates, doors and basically anything that isn’t a wall, where the 9mm pistol has fast fire rate, but doesn’t pass through any obstacles. Or if you prefer to settle things the old fashioned way you can pick up a sword and body armour and knight yourself Sir Quackington.
Being the last duck standing will win you a point, and there is a point cap (which you can adjust yourself in the lobby). Every 10 games, there is an interval in which it shows each player's score. There is a variety of maps, and each map is randomly chosen at the start of each round.
It’s the simplicity and stupidity of watching two ducks with swords and body armour fight to the death that never seems to get old. I didn’t want to stop playing the game because it was hysterical, in the good way. It was fun with just two of us, so I can only imagine what a full four-player game will be like.
Overall, Duck Game caught me by surprise, and once it had me, it didn’t let me go. A must-have for a party-game or even one for when a friend over. Its simple yet humourous design makes for a brilliant game.
Duck Game (Reviewed on Ouya)
This game is great, with minimal or no negatives.
