Dragon Age: Witch Hunt Review
Witch Hunt is the newest, and final piece of downloadable content from BioWare for their hit RPG, Dragon Age: Origins. It sees you either taking an imported character from your Origins adventure, or creating a fresh, higher level character and taking things from there, much like the previous expansion, Awakening.
Your quest here, is to hunt down everyone’s favorite sarcastic lady-mage, Morrigan from the original adventure. We’re supposed to get closure here, despite the fact many thought we’d never see her again after her ominous last words in the main game, “Never follow me.”, but this little DLC is supposed to fill that void.
You take control of your Warden (new or imported) and at the very beginning of the adventure, visit Flemeths hut with your trusty canine companion, as you have heard there was sightings of a female there. Could it be Morrigan? Along your journey, you will end up with a party of four adventurers, yourself, your Mabari Hound, a Dalish Elf called Ariane and a Mage, called Finn. The characters behave like you’d expect, interacting with one another through humurous little conversations back and forth, and they’re a nice accompaniment on your journey.
The combat is the same as it was before, with the pause and issue commands approach, and it’s still as fun as ever. However, the encounters are relatively short this time around, since technically the Darkspawn have been banished since your previous victory, it makes sense they’re in short supply - but there’s enough combat to keep you interested.
You’ll get a couple of extra little tidbits in the form of activities, for lack of a better word. These involve using index cards at the Mage’s Circle library to find information on an important Dalish artifact, and following a magical light system in the Deep Roads. They’re new, and while not terribly interesting, they add a little flavor to the same old Dragon Age run, pause and kill way of things.
The DLC’s focus, however, is tracking down the sultry Morrigan. This is where the whole thing falls apart unfortunately. Morrigan is one of my favorite characters in recent memory, and I was disappointed to discover the DLC dedicated to her left me with a feeling of emptiness. It’s not worth it, and it doesn’t satisfy your curiosity about what happened to her or where she’s been.
Priced at 560 MS/Bioware Points and £5.49 on the PlayStation Network, for what amounts to a maximum of about two hours gameplay and an unfulfilling ending, it disappoints me that I simply can’t recommend this to any save for hardcore Dragon Age fans who are desperate to see Morrigan again for ten minutes. A missed opportunity with their final piece of official content before Dragon Age 2.
Dragon Age: Witch Hunt (Reviewed on Windows)
Game is enjoyable, outweighing the issues there may be.
