Ding Dong VR Review

Ding Dong VR Review

I decided to check out a bunch of games on the Meta Quest 3, to give it a real test rather than just check out what was brand new or custom designed for it. So, a simple, indie game called Ding Dong VR caught my attention, a one-button arcade game.

The premise of the game is simple, you press a button on your controls to make the circle move from the top of the screen to the bottom, then press to make it move back again. Avoid the shapes that travel horizontally across the arena, and try to collect the power-ups which last for about five seconds at a time.

I’d like to say that there are deeper mechanics at play, but Ding Dong VR is literally just that. Avoid the squares, rectangles, lines, circles, and anything else. Of course, if you leave your circle at the top or bottom for too long it will continue to grow in size and make it harder to avoid the shapes.

Power-Ups are things like time freezing, exploding all of the shapes, and invincibility, but they will appear at random so there’s never a guarantee you’ll get any. You’ll just have to keep dinging and donging to try and beat your own high score, as you get one point per movement. Most of the Steam achievements are around the fact that you managed five extra points more than the previous achievement.

The graphics are nice and crisp looking, but if you’re not a fan of the “neon explosion” effect, you’ll hate this. The shapes explode when they hit the opposite side of the screen, so you’re constantly getting sprays of neon in the face. I quite like it, personally, so had no issues there. Audio-wise there’s nothing too much to talk about, with a fine music loop and basic sound effects.

You can unlock new looks for your circle, but other than that, that’s really all there is to say about Ding Dong VR. It is what it appears to be, a one-button arcade game. No muss, no fuss.

Ding Dong VR (Reviewed on Meta Quest)

This game is great, with minimal or no negatives.

It doesn’t claim to be anything it isn’t, though it’s not going to blow the world of VR away.
