Cuboid

Cuboid. A game that can potentially have you ripping your own hair out at the roots. Yet you'll keep coming back to it, for it's one of those games that can become extremely addictive, to the point where you want to keep playing till you've mastered it.

The premise here is very simple, deceptively so. Identical to a popular online game known as “Bloxorz” the goal here, is to take a cube (basically two boxes tall) and get it in the hole at the end of a board. As I said, the premise is simple, but completing harder levels is anything but.

 Cuboid

The first few levels have been designed as training exercises to get you used to the games simple controls and your goal. The controls, as mentioned, are very simple. You'll be using the d-pad or left analogue stick to move your cube over the level. Up, down, left and right are all that is needed here.

During these training levels you'll also come across some features the game will throw at you later on, such as switches. Switches either create or destroy a block on the board you can use to help you manoeuvre around.

Once you get past those first few levels, things start getting immediately trickier, as the levels become bigger and more complex. After completing ten levels, you are given a chance at a bonus stage, there are six of these altogether (Sword, Shield, Goblet, Rod, Ring and Crown). These bonus levels are more challenging than the standard stages, as instead of counting your moves as you make them like the standard levels, here you have a set amount of moves to make it to the goal, if you don't make it, you fail. However to give you a hand, there are glowing orbs scattered over the board which increases your allowed moves. They are still however a good challenge to play through.

Once you've mastered the Novice levels, you can move onto Expert mode. This gives you all new levels that add things such as teleport blocks (split your cube in half and place each half in a different place) and switches are more often usedhere.

It's once you start playing on these expert levels you realise how tricky the game can become. You might have found yourself haring through the first set of levels, maybe even doing each one in under 20 moves, but here you'll frequently see yourself amass over 200 moves per level until you get the hang of them. This adds to the challenge, however once you've figured out how certain little pieces of board are navigated, you'll likely have much less trouble on the later levels where a few tricks from before are reused.

As you're rolling your cube around these frustrating levels, you're treated to some good old HD visuals people are used to from PSN releases. Of course, as there's only a cube, a flat board and a background there isn't much to look at. But it all has a nice shine.

The music is pretty forgettable, but if you get stuck on a particular level you won't be paying any attention to it anyway, I know there was a good few times I spent about 20 minutes on one level, where as on others I had spent roughly less than a minute.

At £7.99 from the Playstation Store, it'll be worth a shot if you like your puzzle games, but as said, if you get the hang of expert mode early on you might find yourself getting through the whole game quickly and other than the obligatory trophies, there isn't much incentive to go back once you have completed it.

This game is good, with a few negatives.
