Patterns Beta - First Impressions
For those here that frequent the Steam store, you may have seen the new game that is currently in beta called Patterns. But, what exactly is it?
Virtual creativity toys seem to be all the rage nowadays; Minecraft, Terraria, Don’t Starve, Garry’s Mod. All these games are extremely popular and well known. I am a big fan of all of them and I have clocked up at least 200+ hours on each one of them (except Don’t Starve, which was good at first, but the developers are adding too much to it now). So Patterns would obviously appeal to me; even if I have no idea how to do anything apart from breaking stone and falling to my death several times a minute.
If I was good at Patterns, I would probably be making massive, beautiful sculptures that mean something. But I’m not, unfortunately, so I had to look at trailers to get the full gist of things as there isn’t an obvious guide. You can collect blocks and triangles and combine them together to make new shapes and patterns.
So Minecraft with triangles. That’s what it’s been described as, and it almost is, without the monsters, and with... PHYSICS! Now blocks obey physics instead of floating in the air without a care in the world, as well as blocks straining if too much pressure is put on them, so you can’t support your massive tower with a single block.
But as I mentioned before, it is pretty difficult to get into Patterns. With no obvious guides on what to do, pretty much all you know to do at first is break everything you see. But Patterns is still in early beta so I will keep on following it up and keep you updated on any big new features should any be added.
So in the meantime, get making those Patterns better than I did!
