Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes - Definitive Edition Preview
The original Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes was one of my favourite Nintendo DS games way back in 2010; It was the perfect mix of match-three puzzling with a surprising layer of turn-based strategy that worked perfectly in bite-sized sessions. The fact it had wonderful pixel art was just the icing for younger me.
It later got HD releases on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Steam, as well as mobile ports that did a good job of updating the visuals alongside a whole lot of balance tweaks. I don’t really think anyone was expecting a modern re-release over ten years later, but here we are with Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes - Definitive Edition!
So what is Clash of Heroes? It’s an RPG-style puzzle game, in a similar vein to Puzzle Quest, in that you have a simple overworld map that you traverse and encounter battles. Combat sees you grabbing units (such as archers, pixies, and the like) from the bottom of columns and matching them with same-coloured characters elsewhere to launch attacks.
There is a little more to it than that as the shapes you match up also matter: horizontal groups of three create a wall, for example, that stops an enemy attack. The basic aim is to deal damage to your opponent by striking the top of the screen, but obviously, enemy units and a variety of spells make that simple task much harder.
Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes - Definitive Edition is set to include the I Am the Boss DLC which lets you play as the four core game bosses, as well as a brand-new multiplayer boss called Euny the Archdruid in any of the non-campaign game modes, those being Quick Battle and Online and Offline Multiplayer modes. Visually, the game has a touch-up, too, with refreshed character art, and the multiplayer is getting a full rebalance.
It’s a shame there isn’t more new content being added, and I feel bad for Xbox owners seemingly being left out of this re-release, but I’m excited to see how Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes - Definitive Edition turns out when it releases on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC later this Summer.
