Alice VR - gamescom Preview
Alice VR is an adventure sci-fi game that developers Carbon Studio describe as an experiment in exploring the power of virtual reality. The game’s premise revolves around your character suffering a malfunction in their spaceship, causing a crash landing which wakes you up from cryo-sleep. From making an emergency landing on an alien planet the player’s task is to find fuel and escape. Unfortunately for you, it looks like most of the planet’s citizens have mysteriously disappeared.
The game, which is explained to me as part-puzzler, part-walking simulator, attempts to ape Alice in Wonderland by providing a series of mind-bending challenges to the player involving gravity, dimensions and flipping your perspective upside down. Trapped in a small booth in the corner of gamescom it was tough for me to properly navigate the obstacles without tripping over the Oculus Rift’s wires.
Alive VR uses the Unreal Engine 4 to bring things to life and it must be said it does a good job. The game has been designed for VR “from the ground up” for the purpose of “pushing the envelope” for what can be done with the new medium.
Alice VR releases on 27th October 2016 on Windows with compatibility for the HTC Vice and Oculus Rift.
