Yakuza: Like a Dragon Launches on (Some) Next-Gen Platforms

The next entry in the long-running Yakuza series is here. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is out now on Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows. Notice any platforms missing? That's right: no PlayStation 5, and it won't be available upon the console's launch either. That's because Yakuza: Like a Dragon won't be coming to PlayStation 5 consoles until 2nd March 2021.

In what is almost certainly one of the many marketing agreements made between publishers and console manufacturers, Sega and Microsoft have buddied up to make the Xbox Series S/X that much more appealing to Yakuza fans (or fans of wacky brawling RPGs in general). The Series S/X gets a game that, for a while,  the PlayStation 5 doesn't; in return, Sega gets a hefty chunk of cash and/or a Microsoft-funded marketing boost. It's a fair trade, and everyone wins! Except, of course, for Sony... and owners of its shiny-new console.

As for the game itself, reports are positive so far. Players take the role of Ichiban Kasuga, an (innocent) ex-convict who must rise with his rag-tag gang of cohorts and become unlikely heroes on the streets of Yokohama. Like a Dragon looks to be another wacky entry into the slice-of-life series with a few welcome twists to throw off long-time fans. Check out the trailer above and we're sure you'll see what we mean.

As it's backward compatible and gets a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5 when that version launches, is that such a major issue?

That's a good point. I mean, I don't think the two versions can transfer saves, but other than that it's not a massive issue... Although, doesn't that just make the whole thing seem a bit petty?

Like, why bother with the timed exclusivity at all?
