Xbox One May Get Backwards Compatibility
Microsoft is "thinking through" backwards compatibility, partner development lead Frank Savage has revealed.
The company has gone back and forth on the issue--at one point referring to backwards compatibility as "backwards thinking"--but last September Microsoft announced that it was considering enabling backwards compatibility via its Azure cloud servers, similar to Sony's current proposal for the PlayStation 4. However, Microsoft determined that current cloud-streaming technology was too unreliable for their needs, and the company has apparently moved away from the idea.
The current plan according to this latest announcement is for an Xbox 360 emulator on the Xbox One--similar to the PlayStation Store's emulators on the PlayStation 3 which allowed it to run previous gen games. Microsoft however, is still apparently very much in the planning stages, and there is no planned release date yet for backwards compatibility on the Xbox One.
