WWE 2K20 Suffers a New Year's Mini-Meltdown

WWE 2K20 Suffers a New Year's Mini-Meltdown

Having made its way onto numerous lists for the worst games of the year, WWE 2K20 continued the streak set by its disastrous launch and briefly stopped functioning in the game's titular year of 2020. Players booting up the game with their system clock set to the current year found themselves unable to launch many, if not all of WWE 2K20's modes. A fix has now been implemented by 2K to fix the issue; before then, the only workaround involved reverting the system's clock back to 2019.

The whole debacle seems tinged with elements of Y2K, albeit on a much smaller scale. It's worth noting that the issue seems to have been server-based, as the fix was implemented on all affected platforms (PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4) without any need for a patch on the user's end. These issues are to be expected as gaming grows increasingly reliant on external servers, although it's hard to imagine how a simple year change could bring a game to its knees like this.

The exact cause of the problem is yet to be publicly disclosed. 2K Support's Twitter account has only released the following two statements regarding the situation:

What a poor start to the year for WWE fans, as if this latest release hadn't scarred them enough already...

From what I saw of this on reddit, it was definitely server-side. It affected people in countries that hadn't reached 1st January.

Weird that the fix was to locally change the date back to 2019 though.
