Warlander is an Indie Roguelike that Stands Out From the Crowd
When you read 'indie roguelike', disregard any vaguely retro pixel-art associations that may pop into your head. That's because Warlander, the upcoming slash-em-up from Clock Drive Games is an indie roguelike that looks to shed the genre conventions that many are tired of by offering an over-the-shoulder sword combat experience.
Unforgiving and replayable like many roguelikes before it: Warlander puts players in charge of their combat style as they traverse a procedurally generated and interactive world. Although progression systems and customisation flesh out the experience, the stamina-based combat is at the game's core: precise sword fighting and manipulation of the environment will have players achieving victory against their foes. Failure to master these mechanics will see players killed and returned to the start of the game, without any of the XP or progress they earned pre-death.
Discussing the studio's take on the roguelike genre, Goran Rajsic (Creative Director) states: "We struck the perfect balance of sword-fighting gameplay, an in-game progression system and punishing roguelike elements that captured the essence of the genre but also added our own twist to it."
Warlander releases on Steam 26th February for $14.99 (roughly £11.99).
