Valve Release SteamVR Performance Test Tool
With the impending launch of Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, a lot of attention is currently being focussed on VR technology. The tech mnight be too expensive for a lot of users at the moment, but that hasn't stopped a lot of people getting very excited. For those who aren't sure if their system is up to scratch, Valve have lent a helping hand in the form of a testing tool.
It's a free download directly from Steam, featuring a number of test scenarios which are designed to check your PC is good enough to play VR in a stable manner. Featuring a "robot repair" tech demo set in the labs of Aperture Science, the app will check if your hardware is beefy enough, and will tell you the weak link if it is not.
At present, the tool does not support multi-GPU setups as this will not be supported by any VR games at launch. There's been a few reports that Nvidia's Optimus technology throws it off as well. Like anything early adopter, you might see a few issues with this, but as it's free, it'll probably be less frustrating to see issues with this software than with your £500 new headset...
