Valve Documentary Follows World Champion Dota 2 Players
Valve’s first feature length documentary, Free to Play, is available for pre-load leading up to its March 19th release date.
The documentary follows three professional gamers competing in the first Dota 2 International Tournament for a million dollar prize. Sponsored by Valve, the 2011 competition—which is now held annually around the globe—brought together sixteen of the top Dota 2 teams from around the globe to compete in what is still considered the most high-stakes annual e-sports competition. By tracing the journeys of three players—Dendi from Ukraine, hyhy from Singapore, and Fear from Oregon—Free to Play looks at what drives people to compete in one of the world’s fastest growing ‘sports’.
Following its premiere on March 18 at the Castro Theater in San Francisco, California, Free to Play will be available to download through Steam, where it will be, of course, free to play. Digital viewers are able to pre-load the film, which allow them to watch it immediately upon its Steam release. Free to Play Competitor Packs, which include custom skins for Dota 2, will be available for purchase in both Steam and the Dota 2 Store following the film’s release. A quarter of the Competitor Pack proceed will go towards the gamers featured in Free to Play.
