Valheim Sails Past Expectations with Two Million Sales and Counting

Every once in a while, a title comes out of nowhere and takes the gaming world by complete surprise. Iron Gate AB's Viking-themed survival game Valheim is the latest to accomplish this feat, having breezed past two-million sales, and it's showing no signs of slowing.

This weekend, a colossal 360,000 Steam users were fighting, sailing, building and crafting concurrently in Valheim's procedurally-generated world, putting it among the top ten games of all-time on the platform in terms of concurrent players. Right now, Valheim is the second most popular game on Steam behind Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Richard Svensson, Iron Gate's CEO, discussed his studio's expectations prior to the game's release, saying: "Our goal was pretty much to cover our development cost so we could continue to exist as a studio and continue working on Valheim. I guess our future is safe for a while now."

Valheim is currently available in Early Access, with updates planned which will expand, improve and polish the game. Iron Gate has released a development roadmap for the rest of the year (shown above), but there are no specific dates given for the launch of any given update.
