Two Major Shin Megami Tensei Titles will Release Next Year
The last time fans of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise got any concrete information was from a teaser trailer for the next mainline entry - Shin Megami Tensei V - all the way back in November of 2017. Unsurprisingly, the long silence has led to frustration amongst fans of turn-based demon collecting RPG series, but in 2021 the series will be making a major resurgence with two big releases.
The first of which is an HD remaster of the 2003 cult-classic Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne. Despite Nocturne receiving minor commercial success following its original release on PlayStation 2, the title has continued to gain a dedicated following of fans, with many considering it to be one of the strongest entries in the long-running franchise.
Taking place shortly after an apocalyptic event known as the Conception, players find themselves controlling a half-human, half-demon hybrid known simply as ‘Demi-fiend’. From there, players have to traverse a destroyed lonesome Tokyo in search of answers to what caused the Conception, while also molding the laws and morality of the new world.
Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster will be released in Spring 2021 for both Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
Shin Megami Tensei V has also received a new trailer, giving fans a look at the new protagonist as well as the general visual style of the game. It seems like it has a respectable budget behind it, with a sharp cel-shaded art-style presented in high resolution.
In typical Shin Megami Tensei fashion, we see our new protagonist waking up in a destroyed Tokyo while being faced by Lucifer and a group of other demons. Tonally, it appears to be hitting the mark for what fans expect from the series, bringing with it a sense of dread and despair, with a monologue from presumably Lucifer himself stating that “The God you worship is dead”, and “Order itself has crumbled”.
Shin Megami Tensei V will be released exclusively on the Nintendo Switch simultaneously worldwide in 2021.
