The Original Planetside is Closing Down
As one of the longest serving MMOs out there, Planetside has acquired a huge dedicated following over the years since its 2003 release. The game has been going longer even than the almighty World of Warcraft. Thirteen years later, it's still going strong, albeit with vastly reduced numbers thanks to the success of its sequel, released in 2012.
Sadly, it couldn't last forever, and like all good things Planetside is coming to an end. With Planetside 2 getting bigger and bigger and going from strength to strength, it was always likely that a time would come when it wouldn't be viable any more to keep both games running. That time is almost upon us.
In a statement on their website, Daybreak Games announced the closure of the popular title. The game will continue to run until 4:00 PT on the first of July, after which time the servers will go down for the last time ever. With a new construction system, base revamps and new population caps in place, it's a great time to switch over to Planetside 2.
