The Nintendo Playstation is a Real Thing
Back in July, Reddit exploded with excitement at the revelation from user "Analogueboy" that he had unearthed a prototype of the original PlayStation when going through some old junk belonging to his father who worked in video games.
See, the Playstation as we know it didn't start life as a Sony console at all. It was originally planned to be an addon to Nintendo's Super NES system which gave CD capabilities to the console in much the same way that that Mega-CD did for the Sega Mega Drive. This partnership eventually dissolved however, leaving Nintendo to move on to their cartridge-based N64 and Sony sitting on hardware that couldn't be used. Eager to make something with the prototype they had, Sony added to it and created their own system. The rest, as they say, is history.
Fast forward to today and the device that started it all has been revealed. Its owner showed it off at the Retro.hk event in Hong Kong, and also took it to Engadget for a tear down and a photo shoot. Of course, being a prototype only, there were no games released, but it is a working prototype, showing how games would have loaded and leaving everyone wondering just what could have been.
