Tetris Movie in Planning After Funding Secured
Classic game Tetris is set to be the latest videogame to get a big-screen interpretation. The Russian puzzle classic is the highest selling game of all time, with nearly 50 million copies sold worldwide across countless platforms. Until now, however, nobody has been quite able to translate the aligning of blocks into a film. That is set to change though thanks to Threshold Global Studios, the name of a new cross-Atlantic joint venture between Threshold Entertainment Group and Seven Star Works.
The film was announced back in 2014, but we haven’t heard anything about it since, leading many to assume that the project was either abandoned, or something of a gag to begin with. This announcement shows that actually, they were serious, and serious enough to collect a large amount of money from investors to make this film a reality.
The newly-formed studio have secured $80m from investors for this, their debut movie. It will be a co-production between China and the US, but is set to be filmed in China with a Chinese cast. Those familiar with the game’s history might be thinking that this could be a documentary style film about the creation of the game, which is quite a story in itself. A spokesman for the studio however said that he expects it to be an “epic sci-fi thriller”, suggesting that they really do plan on giving a back story to the stacking of shapes.
