Tencent Purchases Back 4 Blood Developers Turtle Rock Studios
The Chinese holding company Tencent has made another huge purchase with the acquisition of Back 4 Blood developer Turtle Rock Studios.
The developers of the co-op zombie shoot 'em up insist they will still remain independent and post-launch updates for Back 4 Blood will be unaffected, with Turtle Rock President Steve Goldstein saying "Tencent’s outstanding partners, global reach, deep knowledge of gaming and unprecedented support will help us create the kinds of ambitious games we dream of, while allowing us to retain our autonomy and independent spirit."
This isn't Tencent's first foray into investing in foreign videogame companies, with known investments in over 35 different studios, some of which (and one of their more notable games) are listed below:
- Riot Games (League of Legends)
- Epic Games (Fortnite)
- Dontnod Entertainment (Life is Strange)
- PlatinumGames (Bayonetta)
- Remedy Entertainment (Alan Wake)
Last year Tencent even opened its own studio in Los Angeles, to begin work on games for the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Known as "Lightspeed Studios", it's employees feature ex-developers from companies such as Insomniac, Rockstar and 2K. What's next for Tencent and its ever expanding videogame division?
