Tempest 4000 Release Dated for PS4 and Xbox, VCS Conspicuously Absent

After creating the last two sequels to Atari's retro classic Tempest, Jeff Minter and his Llamasoft team are back once again with the fourth title in the series. The last two games were available on the ill-fated Atari Jaguar and Nuon DVD gaming system respectively, and this time, it was looking like the great yak would be seeing his title on another less mainstream system, in the form of the Atari VCS. Of course, that system doesn't actually exist yet, and there's no indication that it actually will either. As a result, the press release we were sent took the much more sensible approach of announcing the release date for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

“Modern home consoles are the descendants of arcade gaming,” said Jeff Minter, Executive Producer of Tempest 4000 and founder of Llamasoft. “We wanted to bring the classic arcade experience into players’ homes, so both franchise legacy fans and new gamers can test their mettle.”

Tempest 4000 remains faithful to the series' original formula, seeing you once again piloting the
Claw, a powerful spacecraft equipped with a slew of explosive weapons. You'll be blasting through 100 levels, aiming for those all-important high scores. The original game was a breakthrough in visual as it was one of the first games to use 3D vector graphics. This new title will be presenting in stunning 4K when it's released on the 17th of July.
