Switch System Update Ver. 10.0.0 - What's New?
Players booting up their Switch consoles today will be met with a little surprise: there's a system update! The significant sounding "10.0.0" version number brings with it a couple of interesting (and possibly exciting) changes along with the vague "system stability" promises that have long since become the changelog equivalent of white noise.
Firstly, system software can now be transferred between the system storage and SD cards. This is a godsend for anyone looking to swap SD cards and manage their game library with any degree of convenience. This feature applies to software, DLC and some update data. Unfortunately, save data and select pieces of update data cannot be transferred.
Additionally, and most interestingly, the controller buttons can now be remapped on a system level. Joy-Con controllers, the Pro controller and the Switch Lite's buttons are the control methods eligible for remapping. Not only this, but up to five 'controller profiles' can be created, presumably for different users and use cases. This choice is uncharacteristically forward-thinking for Nintendo, and reminiscent of Valve and Microsoft's flexibility in terms of input methods with its controllers.
Finally, there are some new Animal Crossing user profile images, additional settings for the 'Play Activity' section and items in the 'News' section can now be bookmarked. There'll be no complaints about these changes—I'm sure—but they're not going to set the world on fire. The data transfer and button remapping features are the star of this show.
Ver. 10.0.0 for the Switch is available to download now. If it doesn't appear on your system, try rebooting.
