Super Mario Maker 2's Final Major Update - What's New?

Releasing on 22nd April, the third and final major update to Super Mario Maker 2 adds a long-awaited and much-requested staple of the Mario franchise. Finally, Switch owners can play 'Mario god' and create their own fully fledged worlds. Check out the update trailer and screenshots above and read on for a rundown of every addition set to hit Super Mario Maker 2.

World Maker

The most significant feature of this update, the World Maker mode fulfils players' wishes dating back to the first Super Mario Maker on the Wii U. Nintendo has gone the extra mile to ensure players aren't disappointed with the inclusion of the following features:

  • A world browser now joins the existing course browser.
  • Worlds link together to create 'mini Mario games'. Up to eight worlds spanning 40 levels can be connected.
  • Players can choose world themes such as Desert, Snow, Forest, Volcano and Outer Space.
  • World layouts are fully customisable with bridges, hills, decorations, bonus stages, warp pipes, stage icons and more.

Powerups

Brand new powerups and old favourites from earlier games burst onto the scene in this latest update. Unfortunately, each powerup is only compatible with a specific game style. Here's the full lineup:

  • Super Mario Bros. 2 Mushroom - Transforms Mario into his Super Mario Bros. 2 form. In addition to changing his appearence, this Mario can ride on and throw enemies. Snowballs can be thrown too (compatible with Super Mario Bros. game style only).
  • Frog Suit - When donning the famed Frog Suit, Mario can swim with increased finesse and run across the water's surface (Super Mario Bros. 3 game style only).
  • Power Balloon - When transformed into a Mario/balloon hybrid, the heroic plumber puffs up to float through the air (Super Mario World game style only).
  • Super Acorn - Swallowing this acorn will have Mario take on the form of Squirrel Mario, where he'll fly through the air like a flying squirrel (New Super Mario Bros. U game style only).
  • Boomerang Flower - With this familiar powerup, Mario can hurl an unlimited number of boomerangs at foes (Super Mario 3D World game style only).
  • Wearable Cannon Box - With this on his head, Mario can charge up cannonballs to defeat enemies and interact with the environment (Super Mario 3D World game style only).
  • Propeller Box - Mario can use this box's propeller to soar into the air up to three times per jump. He can also swiftly zip down to the ground from any height (Super Mario 3D World game style only).
  • Red Pow Box - The 'Pow' block is a familiar sight to most Mario players. This wearable box lets players activate the block's effect whenever they want, up to three times per powerup (Super Mario 3D World game style only).
  • Goomba Mask - Mario's lessons from Agent 47 have paid off it seems. With the Goomba Mask, Mario appears as a Goomba, avoiding aggression from all enemies (Super Mario 3D World game style only)
  • Bullet Bill Mask - Soar through the air as Mario takes on the appearance and abilities of his old foe: Bullet Bill—albeit with a red hue (Super Mario 3D World game style only).

Koopalings

Bowser's legion of Koopalings join the roster of enemies raring to dominate Mario. Available in all game styles except Super Mario 3D World, Larry, Wendy, Morton, Lemmy, Roy, Ziggy and Ludwig will add some spice and a sense of climax to players' stages.

New Parts

  • New parts, stage components and enemies add a little more variety and complexity to the already vast quantity of each on offer:
  • Cursed Key - It's a trap! Upon picking this up, a Phanto enemy will target the unlucky player. (Super Mario Bros. game style only).
  • On/Off Trampoline - These trampoline platforms have their bouncy properties activated and deactivated by on/off switches (Super Mario 3D World game style only).
  • Mechakoopas - A new enemy type with various forms. The red version of this wind-up ne'er-do-well fires homing missiles, the blue one fires similarly coloured laser beams and they can both fly short distances with a jet engine in their nighttime form! (Not compatible with Super Mario 3D World game style.)

Nintendo has done an admirable job at surprising players and significantly improving Super Mario Maker 2 with each subsequent update. This last one doesn't disappoint: a world maker, for many players, completes the Mario Maker experience and nicely 'rounds off' the game. The update launches 22nd April for all players.

It's the marketing strategy Nintendo SHOULD take, but aren't brave enough...
