Sony Ship 4.4 Million Consoles In Second Quarter Of 2014
Sony Corporation CEO Kazuo Hirai can pour himself a glass of 20 year old Yoichi and smile an evil CEO style smile á la Steve Jobs because his corporation sold 3.3 Million PlayStation 4 consoles in the second quarter of 2014.
This boosted the game division revenue by a massive 84 percent. If you add in the 800,000 PlayStation 3 consoles that sold it makes for a pretty tidy sum. The Game and Network Services division made 309.5 billion yen (2.77 billion US) in revenue, an 83 per cent increase year-on-year. It also turned last year's 4.2 billion Yen loss into an operating profit of 21.8 billion Yen (195.5 million US).
Of course, the downside (there's always a downside) is that as a corporation Sony is hemorrhaging money. With a loss of 136 billion Yen overall (1.22 billion US), which is more than the 19.6 billion Yen it lost in the same period last year. The overall forecast for the fiscal year remains unchanged from September at 7.8 trillion Yen in revenue with a 230 billion Yen net loss .
Ouch.
