Smash Bros. Ultimate for Switch is Coming This Year!
Finally! We've finally seen some of the newest Smash game coming to Nintendo Switch!. Of course I say "some", really it was an incredible amount of content that ended up taking over most of Nintendo's Direct. I won't be going over everything here, as I'd probably be here for far too long writing it all out, but the main content we got will be covered.
First of all, it's not a port of Smash 4! The rumours were incorrect after all and this is definitely a brand new game. It does have quite a few similarities to the previous game, but that's to be expected. Smash Ultimate so far seems to act as a conjoining of every previous Smash game, including a huge assortment of stages, music, items and most importantly characters from the previous games.
That's right, every single fighter that has ever appeared in a Smash game in the past will be playable in Smash Ultimate! This covers everything from old guest characters like Snake, characters that were cut like Ice Climbers and Wolf, and even all of the DLC characters from Smash 4. So funnily enough the only place we saw Cloud at this E3 was at the Nintendo conference, (R.I.P Final Fantasy VII Remake).
Major character changes were shown off for some of the returning fighters. Again, going through them all will take far too long, but one that really stands out is Link. That is to say regular Link, not Toon or Young, who both also appear in this game. Link's design has been overhauled to fall in line with his appearance in Breath of the Wild meaning he now wears his Champion's Tunic from the same game, and some of his moves have been altered slightly to fit in with the game. The biggest change is that his bombs have now become the Remote Bombs from BotW meaning that you can detonate them at will. Even his Final Smash has changed, though I won't spoil that and you can see it for yourself.
Finally I'm going to touch on the new characters. On launch there are technically only three new fighters joining the roster in Smash Ultimate. I say technically as one of the newcomers, Daisy, is what is now known as an "Echo Fighter", essentially the clone characters from Smash 4 with minor differences in their moves. Lucina and Dark Pit are also included in this list, however despite his apparent inclusion in this game Dr.Mario was not listed as an Echo Fighter. We'll have to see what happens with that one at a later date.
The two, brand new, unique fighters are the Inklings from Splatoon, (which we already knew), and GODDAMN RIDLEY FROM METROID! I don't remember being this excited for a newcomer coming to Smash since Sonic the Hedgehog, and I was like 8 at the time. I don't want to spoil anything you may have not already seen, but let me just say the Ridley trailer in particular is outstanding, (and a little brutal to be honest). Looks like he wasn't too big after all.
We even got a release date for December 7th this year, so mark the date on your calendars as I have and count down the days!
