SEGA Announce Sonic Mania
With Sonic The Hedgehog turning 25 this year, SEGA decided to throw a party during San Diego Comic-Con, at the popular House of Blues venue.
At the party, they announced two new Sonic games, coming out just in time to celebrate the 26th anniversary.
No. We don't know why, either.
The first one was Sonic Mania, which will be arriving early 2017. A 2D platformer, it reimagines zones from past games, as well as adding entirely new ones. It's a combined effort of SEGA of America with PagodaWest Games, along with Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley.
If you're not familiar with those last two, they were the driving force behind the re-releases of Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on mobile devices. They were working on remastering Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but that was canned - now we can guess why!
Sonic Mania was born out of our fans’ love of the classic Sonic 2D platform games. This type of collaboration is a first for SEGA and we hope everyone will be both surprised and delighted by this title. Sonic Mania has been a passion project for the entire team and we look forward to sharing more details about it later this year. Having the game actually playable at the event itself tonight was testament to the dedication of the team behind it.
- Takashi Iizuka, Head of Sonic Team
Sonic Mania will be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC. We'll give you more details when we get them.
