Release Date set for Hearthstone: Whispers of the Old Gods
The latest expansion for Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is almost upon us. Whispers of the Old Gods will be released on the 27th April in Europe, with our American cousins getting the game a day earlier on the 26th. The expansion, the third for Blizzard's digital TCG contains 134 new card, and a host of new game mechanics. Among the cards are the titular Old Gods; hugely powerful cards that can influence the game whether they are in play or not.
There's a new play mode coming with the new expansion as well. "Standard" mode is designed to be the main way to play and will consist of just the basic and class cards, as well as the last two expansions. Anyone wanting to play with their cards from older expansions such as Goblins vs Gnomes will be able to play in "Wild" mode, which will allow any card that you can get your hands on to be used. Tournaments for the game will primarily focus on the Standard mode.
A few days before the release, Lead Designer Ben Brode and one of Hearthstone's most successful players, Dan "Frodan" Chou, will be livestreaming on Blizzard's official Twitch channel. The stream will feature a number of the game's design team as well and more of the new cards will be revealed in the stream. The stream is at 19:00 CEST on 21st of April, but if you miss it, we will be covering it here at GameGrin so you don't have to miss out.
Pre-orders for the new cards are already open, so it's currently possible to purchase 50 card packs and get an exclusive card back to go with them. They won't be openable until the expansion releases however so it's still a few days before we can get our sticky mitts on the new cards.
