Rare to Re-evaluate Projects as Kinect Sensor Becomes Optional

Rare to Re-evaluate Projects as Kinect Sensor Becomes Optional

Following the news earlier this week that Kinect sensors would no longer be included with every purchased Xbox One British developers Rare are said to be 're-evaluating' their future projects.

The company who were purchased by Microsoft in 2002 have recently focused on producing content that takes full advantage of the Kinect sensor, with their latest titles Kinect Sports Rivals (Which we reviewed here) and Kinect Sports Season Two almost entirely played through the device.

Head of Xbox,Phil Spencer, in an interview with Official Xbox Magazine said that Rare was still deciding on its next project.

"[Rare has] just come off the successful launch of Kinect Sports Rivals, I think I've heard a few times from people asking about Rare - they're in the process of evaluating what they want to do next, and we're working closely with them to see what their new project will be.

So they're free to look at all different kinds of opportunities, they always have been, and we're having a great time trying to work out with them what their next game might be, but we have nothing to announce right now."

Since their purchase by the American software and hardware giant in 2002 Rare has produced titles such as Kameo, Viva Pinata! and Kinect Sports, but the developers are most famous for their Nintendo productions such as Battle Toads, Jet Force Gemini, and Perfect Dark. Whilst there is some contention regarding their output working under Microsoft, with the company moving away from motion controls it would be great to see Rare returning to their more traditional roots.

Microsoft announced on Tuesday that it would ship a new Kinect-less Xbox One package starting in June for $399 or £349. They stated that it will increase sales of both Xbox One and Kinect overall by giving consumers more choice.
