Project Morpheus Update and Release Date

Project Morpheus Update and Release Date

Speaking at their GDC press conference Sony revealed that their VR headset, Project Morpheus, will be available during the first half of 2016.

Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios stated that:

"Our goal with VR is to deliver a sense of presence, making the player feel as though they’ve stepped inside the world of a game. The new Project Morpheus prototype brings us closer to that goal, as it improves the visual experience and tracking accuracy, both of which are critical to achieving sense of presence."

Yoshida also revealed that the prototype shown at GDC will be closer to the finished product, with some key changes being highlighted. These include:

  • A 5.7 inch 1920 X RGB X 1080 resolution OLED display
  • 120hz refresh rate meaning games can be rendered at 120fps
  • Reduced latency to around 18ms
  • More accurate tracking with the introduction of three new LEDs
  • A new ergonomic, user friendly design to take on and off your head.

More details, including information on VR compatible games are expected to be present during Sony's E3 press conference later this year.

For now all we know is that it will be available during the first half of 2016.

I know man! I hope you're saving you $$$ though... I can see it being almost as pricey as the console itself ;)

I think it will probably be about £100-£200.

No one will buy it if it costs as much as a console. Have you ever played VR before?

Not for a looooooong time, so i'm really intrigued by it. I hope it is £100-£200 like you say, and the way Sony have been acting the past couple of years suggest it might be a gamer friendly price. I can just see then reverting back to their old selves, as far as we know Oculus is still being developed but it has been quiet for a while, so if they have one of only a few on the market they can put can a substantial price on it!
