Official PlayStation 5 Storage Upgrades Could be Set for Summer Release
A report from Bloomberg suggests that the previously announced official storage expansions for the PlayStation 5 could be available by summer 2021.
The information, which comes from those briefed on Sony's internal plans, states that the M.2 SSD storage expansion will be enabled with a console firmware update which will also unlock the cap on the console's cooling fans, preventing the added storage from causing overheating issues.
The contentious issue of the PlayStation 5's storage space has been on players' minds since the specs were announced in early 2020. With just shy of 700gb available for games, most players are unable to fit even a fraction of their libraries onto the system, and that's with only a handful of native PlayStation 5 games available. It's no secret that a solution to the inadequate storage drive is needed, and it will come as a relief to many that one may only be a few months away.
However, there is no firm release date or price for these storage drives. A Sony spokesperson has stated that "details will be shared later". Until then, PlayStation 5 owners will just have to make do with the regular "storage drive culling" which has become a staple of the modern console owner's calendar.
