Nintendo Working on New Console
Nintendo held a press conference earlier today to announce a move into producing smartphone games with DeNA, but were quick to assuage fears they are pulling a 'Sega'.
As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename NX. It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.
- Satoru Iwata, Chief Executive, Nintendo
And those are all the details we have.
Most likely it is the next generation of home consoles, as the Wii U was launched in 2012. The Wii lasted for six years before the Wii U came out, and 2017 would be the sixth anniversary of the Wii U - following the Gamecube's five year lifespan.
Of course, the next news they release, in 2016, could be that the NX is due out that year. It is very unlikely that the new console will be a replacement for the New Nintendo 3DS, though it wouldn't be unordinary for Nintendo to have two different handhelds on sale at the same time.
