Next version of Minecraft will be the last for older platforms
Minecraft enthusiasts still playing on older platforms are about to receive the game's last official update. Microsoft recently announced that the aquatic update will officially be the last for its legacy platforms, including XBox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, and Wii U.
Microsoft recently addressed this topic in a blog post, announcing that older consoles would receive the update...but that it would be the last.
"Arriving a little while after the initial launch, players on PlayStation 4 Edition, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PS Vita and Wii U will all receive the Update Aquatic," the blog post reads. "With the exception of PlayStation 4 Edition, this will mark the last big effort to keep those editions up to date with our newer versions of the game. Although we’d love to keep bringing new content to all our players forever, the older generation of consoles now make up less than 5% of our active players, so we’ve made the difficult decision to focus our efforts to support players where they play Minecraft the most and where we plan to add new features: on Java, PlayStation 4 Edition and the versions of Minecraft made with the Bedrock Engine on other consoles, mobile, and Windows 10."
Players on the XBox One and Nintendo Switch versions of Minecraft will need to update to the newer, Bedrock version of the game to receive any future updates (there is still no release date for the Switch Bedrock edition).
The new update will flesh out Minecraft's oceans and other underwater space (previously occupied solely by those creepy squids) with new blocks, new mobs, new items - including a trident, new arrows and enchantments, and more.
