New Wii U Update Takes Consoles Hostage Until you Agree to the EULA
Not everyone reads the User Agreement on a device or piece of software, although it is a good idea to do so. Not everyone can be bothered to wade through what feels like 837,000 pages of text to be told "you just signed away your immortal soul".
Nintendo have taken a lead out of the immortal soul owning book with the latest update to the WiiU console, if you don't like the terms of Nintendo's updated EULA and refuse to agree, you may have expected that, like users of the original Wii and other gaming consoles, you have the option to refuse software or EULA updates and continue to use his device as you always have before. You might expect to give up on-line access, or some new functionality, but that's your choice. That’s a natural consumer expectation in the context – but it doesn't apply this time.
Instead, according to a video by YouTube user "AMurder0fCrows", the Wii U provides no option to decline the update, and blocks any attempt to access games or saved information by redirecting the user back to the new EULA. The only way to regain the use of the console is to click "Agree."
When Sony took the ability to install Linux and run custom software off the PS3, they at least let you continue to use the console, even if it was under some pretty hideous DRM. This new WiiU update does no such thing, once it's on your console, it's agree or own a shiny new doorstop.
