Motion Twin and Evil Empire Bid Farewell to Dead Cells with Final Free Update — Update 35: The End is Near
Early in February of 2024, the dedicated team behind Dead Cells announced the upcoming ending of the development cycle. After six years of active support featuring free content updates and paid expansions — such as the highly successful Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC — it was time to see the indie darling close its doors.
So, what's the final thing in store for the Beheaded? Update 35: The End is Near is now live, featuring a slew of changes. The short and sweet of it is the following: there have been several new additions for hardcore players that love to fight against Curse, 18 new legendary affixes, 40+ new head customisation options, and even more accessibility options. To add on the Curse mechanic, there are now three new mobs, three news weapons, three new mutations, and an entirely new biome effect, giving you more opportunities to be extremely powerful if you want to make it past the boss cell difficulties.
Biome changes means that you get the opportunity to go through both Castlevania biomes in one playthrough rather than having to pick one or the other, giving more routing options. Meanwhile, there were 12 changes, tweaks, and additions to the accessibility options, and nine alternative route options added to the game. The End is Near is a massive farewell and love letter to the fans that have been loyal to Dead Cells from the beginning, and though it is sad to go, Evil Empire and Motion Twin are both moving on to separate projects.
Check out more from Evil Empire — the team behind the game updates and DLC that brought Dead Cells to live — through The Rogue Prince of Persia, which we got to preview during its Early Access period. Meanwhile, the original creators, Motion Twin, are moving on to Windblown, which is currently set to have a 2024 Early Access release, with no further updates on it.
Dead Cells' last update, The End is Near, is out now.
