Microsoft Announce Purchase of Mojang
Microsoft has announced that it is purchasing Mojang, yup, you read that right. All the rumours were true for once. The deal organised by Markus Persson, is for $2.5 Billion US and is the culmination of a move Persson started to head towards some time ago when he stepped away from development of Minecraft.
The boys from Redmond Washington are grinning like idiots at the idea of buying Mojang because of Minecraft. Minecraft has sold 100 million copies on PC alone and it's just come out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,
Notch has stated on notch.net that he's leaving the company as soon as the deal goes through because dealing with all the non programming aspects of Minecraft and Mojang just isn't him.
Notch, Carl, and Jakob are all leaving, the founders of Mojang are walking away with a song in their heart and a bounce in their step. Of course, the big question is what is next for them.
Notch will return to what he enjoys, being " a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter."
Real details are pretty thin on the ground still since the dotted lines are yet to be signed on, but apart from, founders leaving, 2.5 Billion dollars, and no changes to development for platforms other than windows under the purview of Microsoft, it should be noted that Microsoft aren't exactly newcomers to this title. They've been involved in the development of Minecraft since 2012.
We will leave the last word to Jens Bergensten, the lead developer of Minecraft:
I'm still at Mojang, and I'm still the lead developer of Minecraft. Check our blog and @notch's twitter for more info.
