March 2020 PlayStation Plus Titles Have Been Revealed
March’s two PlayStation Plus titles are an interesting mix, with service subscribers being able to download 2018’s Shadow of the Colossus remake and Sonic Forces for free.
Shadow of the Colossus was originally released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, with Bluepoint Games’ remake for the PlayStation 4 completely overhauling the visuals, controls and fixing the original’s choppy frame rate. In Shadow of the Colossus, players control Wander, a teenage boy who enters a Forbidden Land to try and seek out the power to revive a deceased female. Upon setting foot in the Forbidden Land, he makes contact with the disembodied voice of the deity Dormin, who promises to revive the girl if Wander manages to slay the 16 mythical Colossi that roam the lands.
Over the years, Shadow of the Colossus has been met with universal acclaim from critics and players alike, thanks to its focus on unique boss fights, engrossing atmosphere and poignant narrative. The remake was met with similar praise, with critics praising its updates and small alterations that helped modernise the classic without compromising the original’s vision.
Sonic Forces is the most recent platformer released in the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, incorporating the feature that allows players to create and customise their own anthropomorphic creature who helps Sonic and his friends save the world. In terms of gameplay, the title is most comparable to 2011’s Sonic Generations, featuring a mix of 2D and 3D platforming sections, with players being able to equip their own unique abilities and properties to their character.
Critical response towards Sonic Forces was heavily mixed, with criticisms and praises for the game varying wildly between different outlets. While some critics felt that the level design, character customisation and bosses were flawed to varying degrees, others enjoyed the additions and found them to be charming and engaging.
Shadow of the Colossus and Sonic Forces will be available to download via PlayStation Plus from 3rd March to 6th April.
