Introducing the WoW Token

Introducing the WoW Token

If you're a World of Warcraft player looking for a way to buy subscription time in-game, then soon you'll be able to do so. Blizzard have introduced the WoW Token, a new in-game item that allows players to purchase game time with real money and exchange it with one another.

If you're in need of gold you can also sell it at the auction house, the player who buys it will be Soulbound to the Token and can then redeem it for 30 days worth of play time. There are some interesting facts that Blizzard have released regarding the WoW Token including:

  • Token's gold value will be determined by supply and demand.
  • You can't resell the Token once you've purchased it.
  • You're only able to sell Tokens through a dedicated Token exchange in the Auction House.
  • There's no bidding involved for the Tokens as they will be the same price depending on the market's value.
  • Tokens are a secure and sanctioned way to purchase game time.

The WoW Token will be introduced during the game's next patch with pricing details still to be announced.

Hmm.. seems like an odd choice. I suppose they're trying to regulate the economy or something?

It's handy for people who have a ton of gold and no money, without being a straight up IAP.

Yeah, I suppose that's true. I mean, this could backfire hugely and start promoting the Gold Farmers even more. If it's cheaper to buy X amount of gold from them...

Also "There's no bidding involved for the Tokens as they will be the same price depending on the market's value." I don't understand how this is possible? It says that players can trade it with one another. Surely then the player decides the price?

Sounds like a bigger step towards a free-to-play-ish model too. Since you can now get gametime by playing...

Dawson - I don't think that's strictly true. Yes, you can get gametime by playing, but somebody has to buy that gametime, by the looks of it.

You buy a token from their game store with IRL money. You get a non-soulbound token in-game.You can trade that token in-game.

It will make more sense when they unveil it in game.

I may be wrong on this. The bullet points are a little confusing and countradicting.

I was confused by what they're saying as well, it seems that there'll always be a set price that regulates depending on availability etc... But then why the auction house which would indicate some sort of bidding war?
