Hotel Barcelona - A New Collaboration from Suda51 and Swery65

Hotel Barcelona - A New Collaboration from Suda51 and Swery65

Suda51, Swery65 and the staff at Grasshopper Manufacture held a panel for IGN Japan announcing a “super secret” collaboration project.

Cult favourite game directors Goichi Suda (No More Heroes) and Hidetaka Suehiro (Deadly Premonition) held a conference on 23rd October.

Beers in hand, the pair explained that every time they came together to work they would always end up getting drunk and forgetting everything and so this atmosphere was best.

The two directors sat down and got to discussing a new game idea, seemingly from the top of their heads.

It was unveiled that they wanted to work on a side scrolling horror game together, inspired by the Siren games and Twin Peaks named Hotel Barcelona, for mobile platforms, Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia.

When asked about what kind of characters the game would feature Swery stated that he wanted a character that was 100% evil, one you would control and do horrible things that the player wouldn’t want to do.

A second character, a likely heroine of Hotel Barcelona was detailed, a reporter working on an article about the hotel played by Takako Matsu, the voice of Elsa from Frozen, inspired by a horror film he saw where the same actress was killing monsters.

Towards the end of the panel the pair, now on their second beer, whipped their phones out and began texting Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of Silent Hill and Siren, asking if he would also like to work on the project. At the very last second we learned he said yes.

Further more award-winning PixelJunk Monsters 2 composer Jukio Kallio has expressed his interest in joining the project.

The duo have approached publisher Devolver Digital with this pitch and is stated the budget available to them will be $1 million. However Devolver have recently tweeted that they aren't yet aware of this

The conference ended with dedication, promising concept work and a logo at Reboot Develop Red in Fairmont Banff Springs, Canada, taking place on 30th October to 1st November.
