HELLDIVERS 2 Hits New All-time Peak 10 Days After Release Despite On-going Server Issues
The first-ever cross-platform release for PlayStation hit its release on the 8th of February 2024, as HELLDIVERS 2 was released to quite a wide acclaim and love by fans and critics alike. Just a few hours after its release, it became the biggest PlayStation release on PC despite multi-award-winning titles making their way to Steam.
It's been just a few days since its release, and Helldivers 2 already hit new all-time peaks, still achieving new numbers daily. In terms of all-time peaks, HELLDIVERS 2 not only stomps PlayStation's previous releases (with the second highest being God of War at 73,529) but it stomped its own peaks nearly daily, having hit a brand-new one of 411,359 on the 19th of February, marking it as easily the best PC PlayStation release by a landslide.
It's now been nearly two weeks since the release of HELLDIVERS 2, and it still bolsters the #1 Top Seller on Steam. It's sold so well, in fact, that other key retailers, like Fanatical and Humble, have yet to restock, meaning that PlayStation and Arrowhead Game Studios seem to have frozen sales on all platforms (aside from Steam).
A big attributing factor to this is likely its Steam review score — despite its success and how easily it bypassed previous entries in the publisher's repertoire, HELLDIVERS 2 sits at a Mixed score with 98,371 reviews (at the time of writing). This might seem suspicious and strange at first glance, but a quick peek at what everyone has to say reveals the massive (yet great) problem that Arrowhead Game Studios is facing: HELLDIVERS 2 released to way more popularity than was previously anticipated.
Simply put, this brand-new experience did not anticipate such massive numbers in terms of concurrent players. It's the most famous PlayStation release, the 23rd most-played game on Steam ever, and the second most successful release of 2024 (just behind Palworld). Due to this unexpected success, the servers and crashes have been less than ideal, with many players experiencing crashes, black screens, and matchmaking issues that have made playing unfavourable or downright impossible in many cases.
Regardless of its poor review scores, HELLDIVERS 2 is a massive success for PlayStation and PC, and we hope this strengthens and bolsters the relationship between the two, meaning we might see more cross-platform releases. Only time will tell if this will improve that relationship, and we'll hopefully see more releases coming to both platforms (or sooner) from PlayStation's own list of first-party exclusive games.
