NikkiChan didn’t want to do this for a living quite honestly. When he was a youngster at school and the careers advisor asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he’d never said “I’d like to run a worldwide organised crime syndicate”. Generally he just said “I’d just like to be able to sneeze without disgracing myself any more. No, this whole Yakuza boss thing wasn’t planned at all. He always thought that he could make a living out of his matchstick models of celebrities. His 12ft tall tribute to former politician John Major for example had been nominated for two awards in the arts section of the Hastings and Bexhill Observer.
Sometimes though, you just stumble into a job and don’t realise how good you are at it until you’ve been working at it for a little while. NikkiChan didn’t even know why he did it any more. He hadn’t enjoyed it for a long time. Let’s be honest, once you’ve garrotted a couple of people with dental floss, the novelty wears off and it’s all the same. Plus, he was always getting blood all over his good clothes so there was no point buying anything expensive, and the Primark t-shirts with their weird overly tight sleeves were getting annoying.
He started to think. Perhaps after this job, it might be time to retire. He’d been doing this for twenty years now and it was time for a change. But where would he go? You can’t just leave the Yakuza, especially if you’re at the top of the ladder. He’d need to leave the country, possibly even get plastic surgery. It was likely to be painful, expensive, protracted, and quite frankly he wasn’t sure that it would even work. When people need finding, they get found. He knew this better than most people. Dropping the letter into the letterbox, he walked away, still deep in thought.
