E3 2015 - Microsoft Unveils HoloLens
It looks like the future is now--Microsoft has unveiled HoloLens, it's hologram-based competitor to the Oculus Rift.
Demonstrating their headset live at their E3 conference, Microsoft showed how HoloLens can be used to had a whole new dimension (or three) to gameplay in titles like Minecraft with new co-op opportunities and way to interact with virtual worlds.
In the demo, we watched as Microsoft's Saxs Persson first began playing Minecraft using the hololens headset, which can project it onto walls and other surfaces. After being joined by Mojang's Lydia Winters in multiplayer, Persson decided to switch things up a bit.
Projecting the game's map onto a conveniently placed table, Persson was able to see a three-dimensional version of the world map, including subterranean levels. From this view, Persson could now use new gameplay options like creating lightning strikes for unique co-op options.
There's no release date yet on the HoloLens, but if Microsoft can woo developers to their side, it could potentially provide some stiff competition for the Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus.

I was not prepared for this level of awesome to be on display. Mind. Blown.

I'm torn between child-like delight and embittered E3 cynicism myself. This could actually make me pick up Minecraft, though.
