Direct Sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent Has Been Announced

After almost a decade since the release of the horror indie cult-hit Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a direct sequel has been announced titled Amnesia: Rebirth.

The announcement has been accompanied by a teaser trailer that doesn’t reveal too many details, but gives us a look at a few of the different environments. Like the original, Rebirth will be in a first-person perspective, but it looks like the bulk of the game will take place within underground caverns and caves (not too dissimilar to the 2005 horror flick The Descent), as opposed to the castle setting from the original title.

A member from develop Frictional Games had a few details to share on PlayStation.blog: “What is Amnesia: Rebirth? A new protagonist, a new setting, a new story, but built on what we learned from the original game. No gimmicks. No inventing something completely new. This is Amnesia.”

They continue to assure that Rebirth will still push the series forward in meaningful ways, clarifying: “That doesn’t mean that we’re just doing more of the same — in horror, repetition is a deadly sin. You need to keep players on their toes at all times. We’ve had to twist expectations, refine old features, and up the ante on everything you’ve seen from us.”

Amnesia: Rebirth is currently set to release in Autumn 2020.
