Dead Cells' Latest Steam Update Lets Players Revert to Old Build Versions
The latest update for Dead Cells, titled Legacy, brings new weapons, shields, skills, mutations and a new player skin to the game. Crucially, it also gives players the ability to revert to any previous build version and experience Dead Cells as it would have been in months and years past.
Game preservation is becoming an increasingly relevant topic of discussion in the gaming industry, with always online and ever-evolving games presenting the possibility that certain titles may eventually disappear into the ether; lost to time. Motion Twin's Dead Cells is a good example of a game that's seen significant change since its Early Access release in May 2017: an Early Access player booting up today's version of the game would soon find themselves overwhelmed with the tweaks, additions and adjustments made since its first public version.
Many players have expressed a longing to return to these earlier versions of the game, either due to preference or for preservation purposes; in the game's latest PC update, players have been given the chance to revisit every previous version without restriction. Starting from its initial Early Access build and spanning all the way to current day, Dead Cells' entire history is open for players.
Hopefully Motion Twin's decision helps set a precedent for developers to remain mindful of the historical significance of their games as they evolve. Time will tell, but at the very least this update is a small step in the right direction for the cause of game preservation.
