Day One Shipments Of Destiny Exceed $500 Million

Activision Blizzard has announced that on day one of release, Destiny has shipped $500 Million in units.

Now this doesn't mean they have sold all that, just shipped it to retailers. The game itself famously cost the same amount to make, so in theory it's broken even now and from this point on the likes of Bobby Kotik and Eric Hisrhberg can shop for a new yacht but there is no guarantee that it has all sold in one day, or indeed will sell in one week.

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg was quoted as saying

, Since the beginning, we've been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off, but not many people believed we'd be able to say it did so on day one. Destiny is officially the biggest new franchise launch in our industry's history. It's also the highest-selling day one digital console release in history. We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation, and Activision's next billion dollar brand.

Whether this does prove to be the next billion dollar brand is yet to be seen, but it was one massive gamble to invest this much when Activision Blizzard still had massive debts from the Vivendi share buyback last year., even with the Skylanders series racking up $1.5 billion in lifetime revenues after just two years on the market.
