Dark Gravity Announced - A Retro Shoot 'Em Up Inspired by the Classics
There's a purity to be enjoyed in the shoot 'em up. Classics like Ikaruga and Zero Gunner represent a simpler time in gaming when a pixelated explosion was more than enough to get the adrenaline flowing. Korgorus, an independent Polish studio, is paying homage to these shooters of old with its upcoming title: Dark Gravity. Take a look at the announcement trailer above.
The gameplay on offer should need no introduction to a lot of people out there: 'flying through space, shooting an endless barrage of enemy vessels and collecting powerups' describes Dark Gravity as well as the first gaming experience of a whole generation. It was a blast then, and —by all accounts— it should be a blast now. With 17 levels to fight through and 34 bosses to encounter, the game shouldn't leave players starved of content either.
Naturally, Dark Gravity boasts the same intensity and difficulty that made audiences fall in love with the classics, with an easier difficulty setting available for less experienced players. Despite its retro inspiration, the game doesn't stay completely rooted in the past: a ship purchasing/upgrade system, non-linear campaign and modernised graphics leave Dark Gravity looking like more than merely a game plucked out of the 80s.
Dark Gravity is set to release on PC Q4 of 2020 and will be coming to Nintendo Switch at some point in the future. A release on additional platforms is not ruled out by Korgorus, although no confirmations have been made at this time.
