Creative England and Crowdfunder Reach Out to Female Game Devs
Crowdfunder and the arts non-profit Creative England have teamed up to track down some English "Queens of Code" as part of a funding project to jump-start women into the gaming industry. "49% of gamers in the UK are women but only 12% of the people making the games are female," the organisations note in the campaign's announcement.
Crowdfunder is offering £15,000 from Creative England to women who are interested in developing, writing, designing and programming. Aspiring devs can apply with their projects through either new or pre-existing Crowdfunder campaigns on the Queen of Code page. The first three projects to reach their funding goal will then receive an extra £5k from Creative England.
Creative England's head of Games & Digital, Jaspal Sohal, notes that while the non-profit regularly supports games studios “we don’t see nearly enough female developers putting applications in"--something the organisation hopes Queen of Code will help to change. Siobhan Reddy, the studio director for the developer behind LittleBigPlanet threw in her support for the campaign as well, encouraging women to submit and create the sorts of games and stories they want to play.
Phil Geraghty of Crowdfunder promised that this will be the first of many campaigns launched in partnership with Creative England. Women and girls interested in applying can do so on the campaign's webpage.
