Chinese Software Piracy Group Calling it a Day
You may remember the report from earlier in the year on the troubles that Chinese software piracy group 3DM were having with getting past some of the latest techniques in the industry. Well, it looks like that may well have taken its toll on the group as they have announced that for this Chinese year, they are suspending all software cracking.
The previous issues that the company had were all related to the Denuvo security software that protects the underlying DRM of the game from being accessed. This time however they are not citing it as a reason for any issues, instead citing that they would like to experiment and see how game sales are affected. Bird Sister, leader of the official forums and group spokesperson, stated "We’ll take a look at the situation in a year’s time to see if genuine sales have grown"
As the largest cracking group active, 3DM were responsible for a large number of high profile cracks. Their ceasefire will likely mean that piracy will be slowed for a number of games. If, as the group suspects, it does translate to higher game sales, it's not clear exactly what this will mean for gamers as a whole ans weather it will affect the amount of DRM that we see or the pricing of bigger titles, but as the story develops, keep an eye here on GameGrin and we'll make sure you're first to know.
