Check Out Sonic Mania's Green Hill Zone and Second Boss

Sonic is returning this spring, back in the style of his 16-bit glory days. Sonic Mania is a labour of love created by indie developers in collaboration with Sega. Sega have handed the reins of their most beloved franchise to the fans; possibly a wise move given the lukewarm reception of a lot of the most recent titles in the series. While we await the release of this new title in the spring, Sega have treated us to some new screenshots and details, including the reveal of a new boss and a gameplay walkthrough of the second act of the now-obligatory green hill zone opener running at a silky-smooth 60fps without frame dropping. (Contrary to the commentary, Sonic always ran at 60fps on NTSC systems, but when there was a lot on screen it would struggle to keep up and the rate would noticeably drop occasionally)

You can check out all the new reveals above. We'll let Aaron at Sega explain the level, but the boss might need a bit of context. He's called "Heavy Gunner" and is part of a series of new bosses called the "Hard-Boiled Heavies". These new bosses are the latest addition to Eggman's arsenal and are set to make your life harder.

Agreed, it's real Sonic again! I'm so glad Sega are endorsing fane-made games, rather than just sending out C and D letters like so many companies.
